Many times I have been told by women that walking into the gym can be intimidating. Those that do venture into the gym primarily stick to the cardio floor and machines. I personally would walk into the gym, swipe my card, and head right upstairs to the elliptical. These days I would rather spend my time with the barbells and gym bros. This change didn’t happen over night over the years I found ways to feel confident on the gym floor and I wanted to share those with you.
These are the rules I follow to be a boss bitch in the gym.
A failure to plan is a plan to fail. My dad loved telling me this and I agree. When you walk into the gym you should have a plan of what you want to accomplish that day. If you are new to lifting I suggest checking out our Beginner Program. By having a plan you will no longer aimlessly walk around looking to the equipment for inspiration. Say goodbye to that “I have no clue what I am doing here” feeling.
It’s hard to feel at home anywhere when you only go once or twice a month. Everyone should participate in a minimum of 3 days of strength training per week. Create a schedule for yourself and stick to it. After a few weeks of consistent training you won’t even think twice about it. The gym will be your second home.
That area with all the heavy things and bros grunting it’s your territory too. While I suggest you always follow basic gym etiquette don’t be afraid to take up the space you need to make gains. If you see a piece of equipment you need being used like a dumbbell or cable machine wait until they are finished with their set and ask to work-in. I promise a lot of the people you meet on the floor are actually really nice.
This seems cliche but music can make the difference when it comes to your workout. Personally I like to listen to something that strikes the right balance between upbeat and badass bitch that will kick your door in. When I throw my headphones on I tune out the world and I tune into my body. Be so focused on your training you don’t give insecurities a second thought. You could always go the Andrew route and listen to Enya.
If you’re unsure about how to use a piece of equipment don’t hesitate to ask a staff member. When it comes to exercise form there are plenty of resources available online. If you are still unsure of how to do it or even how to start I recommend working with a trainer. Learning from a professional was the biggest reason I could walk into the gym confident that I knew what I was doing. Besides that, there’s actually several ways a professional can enhance your experience in the gym. Don’t be afraid to ask for help to make sure you’re on the right track.
