St. Petersburg’s fitness scene has experienced a boom in just the last few years and there are a lot of new players on the scene. No matter what you’re looking for, there’s going to be something here for you but where do you start? Right here!

This is the Serious Guide to Gyms in St. Petersburg.

DISCLAIMER: There are some opinions listed in this article. All information was gathered through word of mouth, our own experience visiting the gyms, and speaking to management.

In this guide, we focused on gyms where you can train using free weights and machines with a regular membership. While some may have additional amenities, our goal here at Seriously Strong Training is to highlight gyms where you can sign up and work out solo in a weight room. That means this list excludes programs like CrossFit, class-specific gyms, and other one-on-one-only training gyms.

Since we focus on a one-on-one personal training experience, we thought it would be helpful to recommend places that clients, past, present, and future, can take their fitness into their own hands. If you’re new to the St. Pete fitness scene or weight lifting in general, we’d love to help you learn the ropes before you set out on your own! There’s a lot to learn, and the field of fitness is always evolving, but our trainers stay up to date so you don’t have to!

Don’t forget to click the banner at the top of the page to schedule your Free Consultation! We’d love to see YOU get Seriously Strong!

On to the fun stuff! We wanted this list to be accessible and straight to the point on the things that matter to you. We’ve broken each gym down by Google rating, address, hours, specialties, and we added our take in there so you can see what aligns best to you!

Our Top Picks

We listed a lot of options here but we want to get you even closer to your perfect match. We categorized these by the questions we get asked the most when choosing a new gym. We still encourage you to read on but if you’ve got some gyms in mind, let these be the tie breakers!

Best 24 Hour Gym: Amped Fitness
Amped wins out by having the most 24 hour locations and the most variety in equipment and amenities. Other gyms feel dead if you’re working out at odd hours but Amped feels like you’re just walking into the party no matter the hour.

Most Well Equipped Gym: Crunch Fitness
Crunch is a big box gym that has a lot to offer. There are a ton of weight training options like power and Olympic lifting platforms, a mass variety of machines, and access to classes of all types. Crunch does a great job of having something for everyone and is a gym that grows with your skill level.

Best Amenities: Epic Health & Fitness
Epic has the basics and then takes it a step further to really sink in that they are trying to give you the best experience possible to one day become a competitor. Train like a champion, get treated like a champion with access to a sauna, massage, stretching, and smoothie bar.

Most Affordable: Planet Fitness
Planet Fitness originally made a name for itself as the affordable option in fitness with cheap basic memberships around $10. Today, what really sets it as the winner for this category are the guest privileges for the Black Card. If you have a repeat gym partner or spouse to workout with, it’s practically one price for two memberships and all the benefits. It also handles membership cancellations in-house so you don’t have to wrestle with a third-party phone call.

Best Strength Training Gym: Suncoast Fitness
This one was really close but we have to give it to Suncoast for Best Strength Training Gym. The variety of equipment, the culture that has been running in its veins for years even when it was Gold’s, the inviting environment: these are all things that are built into Seriously Strong Training’s backbone and we recognize it! Best Strength Training Gym isn’t all about the gear, it’s also about heart and Suncoast has it in spades.

Gym Specialties: General Fitness
Amenities: Women’s Only area; Childcare; Locker rooms; Sauna; Cryo-beds; Compression massage boots; Theragun massagers; Hydromassage beds
Our Take: Amped Fitness is a gym that stands apart by vibe alone. The atmosphere is unique, with spaces dedicated to women only or tactical athletes. It almost feels like a club, which is on par with the vibe it’s going for. Reviewers either love this or hate this, as the cool atmosphere and unique equipment seem to fall flat against poor staffing and issues with the membership contract. If gym selfies are your thing, Amped fits the vibe. If not, you might want to look elsewhere.

Website: AnytimeFitness.comGym Specialties: General Fitness
Amenities: Locker rooms
Our Take: If you’re looking for a 24/7 gym that’s not too big and not too small then Anytime is right up your alley. It’s kind of the middle ground between big-box gyms and smaller studios like ours. Reviewers appreciate the cleanliness and polite staff for both gyms but mention the South St. Pete location has equipment that’s a little dated. Overall, you won’t find as many amenities or functional training tools as you would at places like Crunch or Planet Fitness, but it gets the job done for basic strength and cardio.

Hours: 24/7
Website: https://www.barbellbarbell.com/
Gym Specialties: Strength Training
Amenities: Advanced strength equipment
Our Take: Barbell Barbell is a smaller gym with the same heart that you’ll find at Seminole Strength in Tallahassee. It’s a welcoming gym with a lot of heart and an old-school vibe. Reviewers praise the owner Morgan above all else as a great guy that pours his heart into his business. This is everything we love to hear about a local gym!

Our Take: Beach Bods is one of the more serious gyms on this list in a great way. If you’re looking for an old school vibe that feels like it was pulled from Venice Beach in the 70’s then this is the place for you! It embodies the spirit of hard training. Reviewers praise the gym’s atmosphere and ownership and invite anyone who lives or travels to St. Pete to try it out.

Phone Number: (727) 476-6133
Hours: Mon-Thur: 5am-11pm; Fri: 6am-8pm; Sat-Sun: 7am-7pm

Website: https://www.crunch.com/locations/stpete-northeast
Gym Specialties: General Fitness
Amenities: Childcare; Locker rooms; Sauna; Steam room; Tanning; Hydromassage beds

Our Take: Crunch boasts a lot of the big-box gym benefits with a ton of amenities and a massive floor space with a bunch of options for every type of workout. Whether you’re freeweight lifting, doing classes, or even want to try your hand with the punching bags, Crunch does a great job of adding variety to fitness. The biggest issues we found with the reviews are that most of them have the same complaint: crowded hours and the membership agreement. While common practice for big gyms, you need to make sure you read every line of the contract you’re signing because there are a lot of smaller details that are easily missed and even easier to forget. Work with the membership advisor and don’t be afraid to ask for a copy of your agreement for yourself.

Gym Specialties: General Fitness
Amenities: Childcare; Locker rooms; Pool; Sauna
Our Take: LA is another big box gym company like Crunch and has similar amenities with an added pool. They vary by location so make sure you call ahead of time to confirm what’s available. The locations in St. Pete see members criticizing the lack of general upkeep and issues with the staff so unless you’re committed to the LA fitness brand, you may want to look elsewhere for a better experience.

Our Take: Legends looks and feels like a quality boutique gym with a niche. If you’re looking for a place that’s modern and inviting with a variety of equipment AND you want to build your butt then you’ll fit right in. Legends is new on the scene at the time of this writing so we hope to see more from them as they grow!

Planet Fitness
**Most Affordable**

Google Rating: 4.3 Stars, 1,220 Reviews
Address: 5335 66th St N, St. Petersburg, FL 33709
Phone Number: (727) 826-0976
Hours: 24/7
Website: https://www.planetfitness.com/gyms/st-petersburg-fl
Gym Specialties: General Fitness
Amenities: Locker room; Tanning; Hydromassage and massage chairs; Total Body Enhancement red Light and vibrashape booth; Wellness therapy pods.
Our Take: Planet Fitness might be the most recognizable chain on this list. You’ve probably seen the “judgment-free zone” ads on TV or heard of the serious lifter-dreaded “lunk alarm”. No matter what you believe about the branding, Planet does a good job of being accessible to first-timers while packing a lot in the amenities department. For our fitness philosophy, Planet doesn’t have enough free-weight focus to check our boxes. We like to think of these as one step up from a hotel gym. There’s enough equipment to get the job done, but limited free-weight options mean you’ll have to compromise on what you’re getting out of your gym membership. Reviewers consider Planet a “bargain” gym for its low prices and lax environment. Remember, Planet doesn’t have any barbells, only Smith machines so you won’t get the same bang for your buck on big exercises.

Suncoast Fitness
**Best Strength Training Gym**

Google Rating: 4.5 Stars, 260 Reviews
Address: 33 6th St S, St. Petersburg, FL 33701
Phone Number: (727) 822-9394
Hours: Mon-Thu: 5am-10pm, Fri: 5am-8pm, Sat-Sun: 8am-6pm
Website: https://suncoastfitness.biz/
Gym Specialties: General Fitness
Amenities: Locker room; “Vault” room with glute specific machines; Massage therapy
Our Take: Suncoast is a legacy gym that was formerly a Gold’s before changing hands and locations but the culture has never changed. There’s a real sense of St. Pete history here that you can feel in the air and the values that keep Suncoast a top recommendation are the same ones we value here at Seriously Strong. Reviews say everything without even having to read them: outside of a couple outliers, almost every one has been five stars for three years running.

USFSP Fitness Center- Campus Recreation

Google Rating: 4.4 Stars, 20 Reviews
Address: 131 6th Ave S, St. Petersburg, FL 33701

Website: https://www.stpetersburg.usf.edu/student-life/facilities/campus-rec/
Gym Specialties: General Fitness // Student Recreation
Amenities: Locker room; Pool; Outdoor basketball & volleyball courts; Recreation field
Our Take: USF St Pete is a clean and welcoming gym on campus that is also open to the public. They have a ton of cardio machines, a large weight training area, and several aerobic rooms. While more geared toward student life and the outdoor recreational options, the gym itself gets the job done if you’re looking for options near campus.

Amenities: Childcare; Locker room; Pool; Basketball court
Our Take: YMCA’s always come with 3 things: a gym, a pool, and sport areas. If you’re looking for a more relaxed environment with a few more bells and whistles than a mainstream gym then you’ll find yourself very comfortable at a YMCA. Reviews vary by location but usually the lesser numbers are for specific issues, not the facility itself.

Our Take: We put YouFit into the same category as Planet and Anytime. It gets the job done. Nothing fancy- but it covers the basics. There’s enough equipment for what you need to stay in shape, enough free weights to meet your basic lifting needs, and there are classes as well. YouFit is a simple health club through and through. It is also the only gym on this list with confirmed Silver Sneakers participation for senior members. Reviewers have similar things to say about YouFit that they say about Planet, it’s like a bargain gym but this time with barbells.
