**Updated for 2025**
Tampa’s fitness backbone has old school gyms saddled right down the street from brand new fitness centers and now is the best time to get into one. Whether you’re looking for big and flashy or small and intimate, we’ve got the best options for you right here!
This is The Seriously Strong Guide to the Best Gyms in Tampa.
DISCLAIMER: There are some opinions listed in this article. All information was gathered through word of mouth, our own experience visiting the gyms, and speaking to management.
In this guide, we focused on gyms where you can train using free weights and machines with a regular membership. While some may have additional amenities, our goal here at Seriously Strong Training is to highlight gyms where you can sign up and work out solo in a weight room. That means this list excludes programs like CrossFit, limited membership gyms, class-specific gyms, and other one-on-one-only training gyms. If you’re in the St Pete area, don’t forget to check out our guide to the best gyms in St. Petersburg here!
Since we focus on a one-on-one personal training experience, we thought it would be helpful to recommend places that clients, past, present, and future, can take their fitness into their own hands. If you’re new to the Tampa fitness scene or weight lifting in general, we’d love to help you learn the ropes before you set out on your own! There’s a lot to learn, and the field of fitness is always evolving, but our trainers stay up to date so you don’t have to!
Don’t forget to click the banner at the top of the page to schedule your Free Consultation! We’d love to see YOU get Seriously Strong!
Now on to the fun stuff! We wanted to cut out as much of the fluff as we could so you can find the best match for you. We’ve broken each gym down by Google rating, address, hours, specialties, and we added our take on each gym as well!
Our Top Picks
We listed a ton of gyms here but we wanted to share our top picks for the categories we get asked about the most. We still encourage you to read on to find the perfect match but if you’ve already got some gyms in mind, let these be the tie breakers!
Best 24 Hour Gym: Anytime Fitness
Like our guides for Tallahassee and St. Pete, Anytime wins this category by 2 measures: amount of locations and access to barbells. Three gyms across the city all equipped with bars and racks makes this our top pick for 24 hour access because you’re not trading equipment for availability or vice-versa as with some other 24 hour options.
Most Well-Equipped Gym: Gold’s Gym
Gold’s Gym takes this one because it doesn’t swap amenities for modern fitness trends. Free weights, machines, outdoor areas, and a section dedicated to leg and glute work show that Gold’s commitment to developments in the sport of fitness is one that will set the standard for gyms everywhere. There’s a ton of different ways to train your body, Gold’s is determined to find them all.
Best Amenities: EōS Fitness
EoS Fitness has the most amenities for a health club on this list. Pools, saunas, childcare, locker rooms, and cardio theaters all packaged into gyms that offer class settings and a fully stocked weight floor make it impossible to get bored. Even if you’re not working out, it’s easy to take a rest day and hang out in the gym.
Most Affordable: Planet Fitness
Planet Fitness originally made a name for itself as the affordable option in fitness with cheap basic memberships around $10. Today, what really sets it as the winner for this category are the guest privileges for the Black Card. If you have a repeat gym partner or spouse to workout with, it’s practically one price for two memberships and all the benefits. It also handles membership cancellations in-house so you don’t have to wrestle with a third-party phone call.
Best Strength Training Gym: Powerhouse Gym Athletic Club
Powerhouse Gym Athletic Club is a no-frills gym at its core that has been graced with bodybuilding royalty. It continues the legacy of strength sports and creates a space that feels like you’re really working toward something greater than yourself. If you’re looking to add your name to a long list of lifters before you, this gym is for you.

Our Take: If you’re looking for a 24/7 gym that’s not too big and not too small then Anytime is right up your alley. It’s kind of the middle ground between big-box gyms and smaller studios like ours. Reviewers comment a lot of positivity for each location with a few points occasionally knocked off for cleanliness or contract issues. Overall, you won’t find as many amenities or functional training tools as you would at places like Crunch or Planet Fitness, but it gets the job done for basic strength and cardio.

Our Take: Crunch boasts a lot of the big-box gym benefits with a ton of amenities and a massive floor space with a bunch of options for every type of workout. Whether you’re freeweight lifting, doing classes, or even want to try your hand with the punching bags, Crunch does a great job of adding variety to fitness. Similar to Anytime, reviewers praise cleanliness and the amount of equipment but the membership practices require your full attention. Work with the membership advisor and don’t be afraid to ask for a copy of your agreement for yourself.

Our Take: Eos does a really good job of offering the full health club experience with what they describe as a “plethora” of amenities as well as a fully stacked exercise floor. What we love is the modern feel to each one, it feels like it’s changed to meet the needs of the fitness world with all sorts of new toys. Reviewers love those amenities and equipment with the most consistent complaints being crowding and-you guessed it- membership difficulties that come down to more of a lack of understanding. With all the entries in this list make sure you read what you’re signing!

The Forge 24/7 Fitness
Google Rating: 4.9 Stars, 332 Reviews

Phone Number: (813) 695-1636
Hours: 24/7
Website: https://www.theforgetampa.com/
Gym Specialties: General Fitness
Amenities: None listed
Our Take: The Forge is the only gym on this list where you can sign up completely online and be able to access the gym at will from there without ever interacting with another person. There are staffed hours however the vibe in both quality and practice tells us this might be better suited if you’ve been lifting and know what you’re doing already. Reviewers have a great cult following for this gym and the negative reviews really can be summed up to crowding and the fact that there’s only one bathroom. If you ever wished you had a garage gym that was viking themed, this is pretty close to that fantasy.

Our Take: Everyone loves a classic. If you’re looking for the gym culture that built gym culture then this is it. Gold’s is the legacy name that stretches back to the golden age of bodybuilding and the Tampa location continues walking on with it. Today, Gold’s offers modern fitness equipment, new amenities, and still manages to keep that backbone of being a true classic. Reviewers have one thing to say and they stand on either side of this statement: this is a serious gym for serious lifters regardless of which sport they’re training for.

Our Take: LA is another big box gym company like Crunch and has similar amenities with an added pool. They vary by location so make sure you call ahead of time to confirm what’s available. The different locations in Tampa see reviewers both criticize and praise the upkeep. A lot of the general housekeeping isn’t bad but there are complaints of equipment breakdowns left alone for long periods of time or rusty areas. LA has a lot to offer but you’re really paying for the name above all else.

Gym Specialties: General Fitness
Amenities: Locker room; Tanning; Hydromassage and massage chairs; Total Body Enhancement red Light and vibrashape booth; Wellness therapy pods.
Our Take: Planet Fitness might be the most recognizable chain on this list. You’ve probably seen the “judgment-free zone” ads on TV or heard of the serious lifter-dreaded “lunk alarm”. No matter what you believe about the branding, Planet does a good job of being accessible to first-timers while packing a lot in the amenities department. For our fitness philosophy, Planet doesn’t have enough free-weight focus to check our boxes. We like to think of these as one step up from a hotel gym. There’s enough equipment to get the job done, but limited free-weight options mean you’ll have to compromise on what you’re getting out of your gym membership. Reviewers consider Planet a “bargain” gym for its low prices and lax environment. Remember, Planet doesn’t have any barbells, only Smith machines so you won’t get the same bang for your buck on big exercises.

Powerhouse Gym Athletic Club
**Best Strength Training Gym**

Website: https://pgathleticclub.com/
Gym Specialties: General Fitness; Athletic Training
Amenities: Childcare; Locker rooms; Sauna; Nutrition service; Competitive sport coaching
Our Take: PGA might be the most impressive gym on this list in terms of sheer volume of what it offers. The Powerhouse name is another staple in the competitive fitness sports world. There are technically two locations in Tampa, this entry is for the Athletic Club near Seminole Heights, not the smaller gym up in Brandon. This is a training facility that boasts no frills, just pure results. If you’re looking to train yourself to the absolute next level then you’ve found your gym. Reviewers comment on the pricier membership options and contracts but there’s a ton of love for the sport here otherwise! PGA Tampa is the real deal!

Amenities: Childcare; Locker room; Pool; Basketball court
Our Take: YMCA’s always come with 3 things: a gym, a pool, and sport areas. If you’re looking for a more relaxed environment with a few more bells and whistles than a mainstream gym then you’ll find yourself very comfortable at a YMCA. Reviews vary by location but usually the lesser numbers are for specific issues, not the facility itself. Remember, these locations are the only two that are equipped fitness facilities with the other locations being administration or children’s programs.

Amenities vary by location and the website is still under construction, call ahead for details!
Our Take: We put YouFit into the same category as Planet and Anytime. It gets the job done. Nothing fancy- but it covers the basics. There’s enough equipment for what you need to stay in shape, enough free weights to meet your basic lifting needs, and there are classes as well. YouFit is a simple health club through and through. It is also the only gym on this list with confirmed Silver Sneakers participation for senior members. Reviewers have similar things to say about YouFit that they say about Planet, it’s like a bargain gym but this time with barbells.
